ORO positional sensor for expectant mothers
ORO positional sensor for expectant mothers
A clinically inspired sleep position monitoring system that gently encourages safer side sleeping during late pregnancy.
From 28 weeks of pregnancy, NHS guidance recommends going to sleep on your side rather than your back. The ORO Stillbirth Prevention Sensor provides a discreet, reassuring reminder if you roll onto your back and remain there while sleeping.
Small and lightweight, the sensor is worn discreetly inside the included maternity bra. When it detects that you have been lying on your back for more than one minute, it produces a gentle vibration, encouraging you to change position without a loud alarm or unnecessary disturbance.
It is a simple way to support safer sleeping habits during the third trimester—helping you settle down with greater confidence at night and during daytime naps.

Why side sleeping matters after 28 weeks
Reliable clinical research has found an association between going to sleep on your back during the third trimester and an increased risk of stillbirth. The combined weight of the baby and womb may place pressure on major blood vessels, potentially affecting the flow of blood and oxygen to the placenta and baby. It can double the risk of stillbirth.
For this reason, the NHS and Tommy’s recommend going to sleep on either your left or right side after 28 weeks. This advice applies whenever you go to sleep, including:
- At bedtime
- After waking during the night
- During daytime naps
Waking up on your back is not a reason to panic. Simply turn onto your side before going back to sleep. The ORO Side-Sleep Sensor is designed to help with precisely this moment by gently making you aware of your position.
How the ORO Side-Sleep Sensor works
The sensor is positioned between the shoulders using the specially designed garment supplied. Once activated, it monitors your sleeping orientation rather than your baby or any of your baby’s vital signs. If you roll onto your back and stay there for more than one minute, the sensor vibrates gently. This subtle prompt is intended to encourage you to turn back onto either side before returning to sleep.
There is no need for a loud audible alarm. The vibration is designed to alert the wearer discreetly without waking a partner or disturbing the rest of the household.
1. Position
Place the sensor securely between your shoulders using the appropriate garment.
2. Activate
Switch on the sensor when you are ready to sleep or take a nap.
3. Sleep on either side
Settle on whichever side feels most comfortable. Current UK guidance supports both left- and right-side sleeping.
4. Receive a gentle reminder
If you remain on your back for more than one minute, the sensor vibrates to prompt a change of position.
Reassurance without unnecessary anxiety
Pregnancy can already bring disrupted sleep, physical discomfort and understandable worries. The ORO Side-Sleep Sensor has therefore been developed to provide a calm, straightforward reminder rather than a harsh warning.
Its vibration alert was selected following feedback from Professor Alex Heazell of Tommy’s Stillbirth Research Centre. He considered vibration an effective approach and advised against using the sound of a crying baby, which could be distressing—particularly for someone who has previously experienced pregnancy or baby loss.
The result is a more discreet and compassionate product, designed to encourage a recommended sleep habit without creating an intrusive bedroom environment.
Important safety information
The ORO Stillbirth Prevention Sensor is a positional reminder and not a diagnostic or foetal-monitoring device. It does not detect reduced foetal movement, pregnancy complications or signs that a baby may be unwell.
Contact your maternity unit immediately if your baby is moving less than usual, you cannot feel movement, or you have any concerns about your own or your baby’s health. Do not wait until the following day.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to sleep on my left side?
No. NHS and Tommy’s guidance states that either the left or right side is suitable. Choose whichever side is most comfortable for you.
What happens if I wake up on my back?
Do not panic. Simply turn onto your side before going back to sleep. The research and guidance focus particularly on the position in which you go to sleep.
Does the sensor monitor my baby?
No. It detects your sleeping orientation only. It does not monitor your baby’s heartbeat, movement, oxygen level or wellbeing.
Can the sensor prevent stillbirth?
The sensor is intended to encourage side sleeping in line with current guidance, but it cannot prevent or predict stillbirth and must not be presented as a guarantee. Stillbirth has many possible causes and may occur without an identifiable cause.
Can I use it before 28 weeks?
Speak to your midwife or maternity team if you would like to use it earlier. The principal NHS recommendation to go to sleep on your side applies from 28 weeks.
Can I use it during daytime naps?
Yes. The advice to go to sleep on your side applies to daytime naps as well as night-time sleep.
Does it replace antenatal care?
No. Continue attending every antenatal appointment and always follow the advice of your midwife, obstetrician or maternity team.
