INTRODUCTION
Like most great inventions, the advanced sleep system you are about to discover was born out of
necessity. They say, “the necessity is a mother of all inventions”.
Although I have always been an entrepreneur, engineer, inventor with (nine patented inventions)
and designer by trade. I also played professional football for several years. It was during a game of

soon as I rolled onto my side, I was in agony. Every morning, I would wake up feeling tired and worn
out, having barely enjoyed any quality sleep.
This began to take such a severe toll on my overall quality of life that my doctors eventually
proposed fusing my vertebrae, a dangerous operation that I wasn’t keen to try. Still convinced a
solution could be found, I decided to tackle the problem myself. I immediately threw myself into a
period of extensive research to pinpoint exactly what was hindering a cure for my back pain and
preventing me from sleeping.
What I found was a revelation.
I realised that many of us sleep incorrectly most of the time without even realising it. Worse,
existing approaches to improving our quality of sleep didn’t go far enough, so anyone experiencing
problems similar to my back pain would only ever see short-term benefits unless an alternative was
found. So, the ORO Advanced Sleep System was born – the next stage of sleep technology that I
was immediately keen to share with the world!

performance is so dramatic that some companies
have even started to give their employees bonuses
for getting more than 7 hours of sleep a night.
For staff at insurance group Aetna, it pays to
get a good night’s sleep. Specifically, $300
(£225) a year. The US firm’s concern about
the impact of sleep deprivation on employee
performance is that it encourages its workers
to sign up for a scheme that rewards them for
getting at least seven hours of shut-eye per
night. Aetna staff that participate can earn $25
for every 20 nights in which they sleep seven
hours or more, up to a limit of $300 every 12

We’re often told to consider our posture when sitting or standing to avoid back and
shoulder problems. As a result, you may already practise daily avoiding slouching
and sitting up straight as much as possible during the day.
But how often do you consider your posture when you sleep? Unfortunately, you

On standard mattresses, once you stop sinking into the mattress, your body weight will
still be pressing on your shoulder, creating a “dead” or “frozen shoulder”, and the
shoulders will always be in the way so that the neck and spine cannot be aligned,

AreFlame Retardants Chemicals in Your Mattress Killing You.
The chemicals, especially the toxic flame retardant (FR) chemicals used in the manufacturing and
production of standard polyurethane and memory foams, expose mothers to several health
dangers. These poisonous pesticides make contact with their skin, exposing them to chemicals
later found in their breast milk and umbilical cord blood. Also, it impacts their health by causing
hyperactivity, poor neurodevelopment, lower IQ, thyroid, and hormonal disruptions.
We have been manufacturing our mattresses using Polyurethane and Memory foams for many
years until, during internet research, we came across an article, “Are Flame Retardants in Your
Mattress Killing You?” which opened our eyes to the dangers of chemicals that are used to
manufacture Polyurethane and Memory foams.
A common complaint about memory foam mattresses is that they contain toxic chemicals used in
manufacturing, especially flame-retardant chemicals based on poisonous pesticides. There are
hundreds of types of FR chemicals. Brominated, Halogenated, Chlorinated, PBDEs, HBCD,s etc.
Many of the FRs toxic Chemicals used in mattresses and furniture are associated with adverse
health impacts, including hyperactivity, poorer neurodevelopment, lower IQ, hormone disruption,
fertility problems and cancer ( including thyroid and breast cancer). Banned fire retardants have
recently been discovered in the umbilical cord’s blood. We do not know how they might affect the
development of foetuses and future health. But we know that they are persistent, accumulative and
associated with cancer and disruption of the hormonal and reproductive system. We have achieved
FR for Latex foam to comply with British regulation BS 5852 without using harmful toxic
chemicals.
Thus, we have replaced all our memory foam mattresses with 100% Latex Foam, which has
many advantages over memory foam.

The Biggest Scandal in UK Product History
This was how an environmental journalist colleague of mine described it to
Mary Creagh MP, Chair of the Environmental Committee, in 2018. She then
asked us to write a paper for the EAC. On the strength of that, the Committee
launched an Inquiry into toxic chemicals in everyday life, focusing on the
Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988. The EAC’s final
report agreed that these Regulations had been proven not to work, but

Stillbirths and miscarriages are a tragedy for mothers and the whole family. Research suggests that
out of one million pregnancies in the UK, 25% end up in babies' deaths before birth. That is not
unique to the UK; In the US, the estimated number of pregnancies is over 6,000,000 with
22.000 soilborne babies, and worldwide, there are over 6.5 million stillborn babies yearly.
What Do Studies Say?
To identify the reasons behind this massive ill-fated rate, we did our research and found several
studies discussing the reasons for stillbirths and miscarriages. While structuring the facts, we
encountered a few risk factors for these occurrences.
For example, in a study in the British Journal of Obstetrics and
Gynaecology[https://obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/1471-0528.14967],
This detailed research suggested that mothers who went to sleep on their backs had at least twice
the risk of miscarriages and stillbirths compared with mothers who went to sleep on their sides.
Furthermore, it accurately stated that 3.7% of late stillbirths were linked with the supine (on-theback) sleeping position.
A study led by Professor Alex Heazell at the Tommy’s Stillbirth Research Centre in Manchester
(https://www.tommys.org/research/research-topics/stillbirth-research/sleeping-position-andstillbirth) confirming a link between miscarriages and stillbirths with the supine (back) sleeping
position.
The Midlands and North of England Stillbirth Study (MiNESS) was published in BJOG: An
International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. It is the most extensive study of maternal
sleep position and risk of stillbirth. Action Medical Research, Cure Kids, Sands and Tommy’s
funded the three-year study.

We are collaborating with Professor, and his suggestions have been taken on board that baby
crying could be upsetting for mothers who were unfortunate to have stillborn babies. We designed
and produced a new ORO Baby Alarm, changing the sound of the baby's crying to vibration. The

SIDE SLEEPING
Extensive observational studies in humans have shown other insights. Pregnant women who sleep

back, the uterus can fall backwards, compressing her aorta and inferior vena cava (one of the main
veins returning blood to the heart), affecting in-utero blood flow. That can happen during maternal

How Does Sleep Change in the Third Trimester?

Snoring and Sleep Apnoea

WHAT is TALALAY & DUNLOP 100% LATEX?

Dunlop and Talalay are two methods for manufacturing the latex foam used in bedding.
Dunlop is the standard technology, developed in 1929, while Talalay is a relatively new, more
complex, costly, and time-consuming method.
Both methods use natural latex and can produce latex mattresses in any of the three blends
described above. The production process always starts with mixing liquid latex with water. Small
amounts of other materials are required to process liquid latex into a solid form, which is necessary
for all latex production. These are natural soaps, sulphur, and gelling and vulcanisation agents.
When the latex mixture is ready, compressed air is used to make foam. The foam is then poured
into a mould, after which the vulcanisation process begins. The latex foam is vulcanised at a
temperature of over 110 degrees for about 50 minutes. The finished mattress core is then taken out
of the mould, washed and dried.
The key difference in processing in the Dunlop and Talalay methods is the two additional steps in
the Talalay technology – vacuum and freeze. When the mould is filled with the latex mixture and
then closed, the pressure inside is reduced to create a vacuum, which lowers the air pressure in
the mould cavity while increasing the air pressure in the foam bubbles. As a result, the foam
expands and fills the mould evenly, and the pressure inside the bubbles is driven to equalise the
entire latex block, leading to a uniform density. The water in the latex foam is then frozen, and
carbon dioxide is injected. The freezing prevents the latex particles from settling at the bottom and
transforming into a solid product. This means the finished Talalay latex mattress has a consistent
density from top to bottom. Because there is no freezing stage in the Dunlop process, the rubber
particles settle in the bottom of the mattress while the liquid latex is gelling into its solid form, so
there could be slight differences in the feel and the firmness of the two sides of a Dunlop latex
mattress. Although the Talalay process takes four times longer and consumes five times more
energy than the Dunlop process, the two additional process steps improve the feel, quality and
consistency of the finished latex, but at a high additional cost and also with a much bigger carbon
footprint.

What Does 6A, 22-Momme, 100% Mulberry Silk Mean?
What does 6A mean?
Silk is graded on an A, B, and C scale. Each letter references a different type of silk product quality.
A being the finest, highest quality silk product, and C being the lowest. The Number takes the
grading and makes it a step further. For instance, you could have 3A, 5A, or 6A. 6A being the
highest. So when you see a silk product graded 6A, you can be sure that it is the highest quality of
that specific type of silk you can buy.
What is 22-Momme?
Momme is a unit of measurement, much like thread counts in Cotton. You can’t use thread count
for Silk, however, because the silk fibres of Silk are much thinner in diameter than that of cotton, so
you can easily reach a high number for a thread count. That’s why momme is used instead.
Momme describes the silk’s weight and density. Higher momme means more strands of silk per
100 yards of fabric, making the product heavier. So if they weigh that fabric and say it’s 19 pounds,
the momme would be 19-momme. The higher the momme, the higher the quality and the more
durable the fabric. Momme can range anywhere from 11-momme to 25-momme. The higher, the
better. For the most part. 19-momme, while higher than 11-momme, is still considered “lower
quality”, while 25-momme is much too heavy for clothes or bedding and is usually used for decor
like curtains. 22-Momme is a perfect balance and is what you should look for if you’re looking for
silk bedding or clothes.

How to care for silk?
Silk is an investment in your sleep, health, and beauty. Following these care instructions
will ensure that silk’s natural properties are maintained. It will look and feel as lustrous
and smooth as the day you bought it for many years to come.
Caring for Silk – 3 simple guidelines:
1) Use low heat (tepid water <30ºC / 86ºF). Machine or hand-wash.
2) Only use a detergent designed for silk – delicate (pH neutral, no enzymes). No fabric
softener.
3) Towel/Air Drying (no tumble drying). Optional: Cool iron on reverse or steamer with
silk attachment.

Machine Washing
Silk fabrics can be machine-washed or hand-washed in cool-warm water (less than
30ºC or 86ºF) inside out (recommended to use a delicate bag for extra protection in the
washing machine). If using a washing machine, switch it to the delicate cycle.
Washing Detergent – pH neutral, without enzymes
Importantly, you must use a pH-neutral delicate detergent without enzymes. The
enzymes in standard washing detergents attack proteins on fabric during washing to
dislodge it; however, as silk fibre is made from protein, these enzymes attack the silk
structure and quickly damage the fabric, reducing the life, sheen, suppleness and
softness in short order. When coupled with a delicate detergent designed for silk/wool,
your Silk bed linen will provide the ultimate in comfort for many years, as beautiful as
the day you bought it. One last word about washing – keep the fabric softener for your
kinds of cotton. Fabric softeners will clog the silk fibres and reduce their lustre and
natural suppleness.
Drying
Silk dries remarkably quickly on the line. Upon removing your silk from washing, do not
wring; gently squeeze some of the excess water.
Silk is a strong fabric, but it loses 30% of its strength when wet, so extra care will ensure
it lasts for many years.

Lay some clean, light-coloured cotton towels on the floor, place your Silk product on top,
and gently roll in a log-like fashion, allowing any air to escape so it doesn’t get trapped
inside and cause a ballooning effect, which may damage the seams. Gently squeeze;
do not wring. Unravel, reposition the silk and repeat (if necessary, for bed linen) before
hanging your Silk to dry outside in the shade or inside out of direct sunlight.
Creases from drying will relax after a few days of use, but if you want a freshly ironed
look, it’s best to iron inside out on a cool setting while still slightly damp (not completely
dry).
This will relax the creases and enhance the lustre. Alternatively, you can use a steamer
with a silk attachment. Make sure to use the silk attachment).
Dry Cleaning
Always an option, but we find it unnecessary (do not use trichloroethylene).
COPPERCLEAN:
Excessive virus outbreaks and global pandemics can occur at any time or place. It is thus
important to take precautions to ensure everyone’s safety and prevent infrastructures like hospitals
from failing due to demand exceeding capacity. Following the growing awareness during the
current COVID-19 pandemic, LAVA developed COPPERCLEAN, where a supplemental yarn of
micro-thin metallised copper is knitted into our fabrics. Copper is a known material that combines
viral-reducing, antibacterial and fungicidal properties for ultimate protection against bacteria or
viruses of all kinds. Recently, various studies showed promising results regarding the effectiveness
of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. An independent study on LAVA mattress fabrics now confirms these
promising results. Results showed a decline in viral activity on LAVA fabric of 97.13% after 2 hours
of contact time with the Feline Coronavirus (same family of SARS-COV-2 coronavirus). Half-life
(where only 50% of viruses are still active) is reached much faster, leading to less chance of virus
spreading and contamination.
Besides, the COPPERCLEAN yarn has shown a bacteriostatic reduction rate of 99.9% on different
bacteria according to the KS K 0693 (2016) testing method. This significantly reduces the risk of a
secondary bacterial infection, which is a common complication of viral diseases such as COVID-19.
Thus, knitting with the COPPERCLEAN yarn allows us to add inherent antibacterial, viral reducing
and fungicidal properties to the fabric that will never wash out. Furthermore, COPPERCLEAN fabrics

Should I be concerned about fire retardants in my child’s
mattress?
Children are vulnerable to the toxic effects of these chemicals because their
brain and other organs are still developing. Researchers have found that
children have higher concentrations of flame retardants in their bodies than
adults.
We know that exposure to flame retardants can negatively affect motor skills,
learning, memory, and hearing in developing babies and young children. And
research shows a link to increase aggressive behaviour in young children. The

Why are mattresses a problem? Fire-retardantchemicals are skin permeable
and are carried in the house by dust and air particles – a mattress acts like a
bellows. There are kilos of these chemicals in standard cot mattress and
children’s mattresses (especially if they are foam!). Children and babies spend
a substantial amount of time each day in this toxic soup and children may
breathe in ‘concerning’ levels of the chemicals when they sleep because their
bodies are right next to the fabric which is back coated with these chemicals.
There are hundreds of different types of fire-retardant chemicals. The only way
to keep your children safe from these is to buy a completely chemical-free
product. But don’t be fooled. Companies can say they are chemical-free whilst
still using these chemicals as they have to meet the UK fire regulations but
have no obligation to tell you how they are meeting them. As these fire-

retardant chemicals are considered a “Safety Matter” by the government,
retailers and manufacturers are not required by law to disclose how they meet
these regulations. If it's foam – don’t buy it – as there is no way it can be
chemical-free.
